Apply Template to Existing Issue

Apply a template to an existing Jira issue to update its fields with predefined values from a selected template.

Templify allows you to apply an existing issue template to a Jira issue that already exists — making it easy to enrich issues with standardized structure, field values, and dynamic content, even after the issue has been created.

This is ideal for use cases where issues were created manually, incompletely, or without using templates — and you want to align them with your team's standards.

🔁 What Happens When You Apply a Template?

When a template is applied to an existing issue:

  • All supported fields from the template are copied into the issue

  • Existing field values in the issue are overwritten

  • Only fields that are present and editable in the current issue context are updated

This feature helps you bring existing issues up to standard without manual editing or recreating them from scratch.

🧪 How to Apply a Template

Applying a template to an existing issue is quick and intuitive. Follow these steps — or use the interactive demo below to see it in action:

  1. Open the Jira issue you want to update

  2. Click the ••• Actions menu in the top-right corner of the issue view

  3. Select Apply Template from the dropdown

  4. In the dialog that appears, choose the template you want to use

  5. Click Apply — the issue will be updated immediately using the template’s field values

🧠 Note: Existing field values can be overwritten. Fields not present in the current issue’s screen will be ignored safely.

🚀 Coming Soon

We’re actively expanding the Apply Template functionality to support more advanced use cases. Here’s what’s coming next:

  • Apply full issue structures When applying a template that contains child issues (e.g. sub-tasks or stories), Templify will automatically create the entire hierarchy in the background and link them to the current issue.

  • Apply linked issues Templates that include issue links (e.g. blocks, relates to, duplicates) will soon replicate these relationships when applied to existing issues.

  • Dynamic text field rendering Fields like Summary and Description will support real-time resolution of dynamic placeholders when applying templates to existing issues.
