userUser Guide

This section is for everyday users of Jira — people who create, edit, and work on issues. It explains how to use Time Tracking and Duration fields on issues, without going into admin-level configurati

Before you start: the app's fields only appear on issues if they have been configured by an admin.

To see and use these fields, your Jira admin must:

  • install Time Tracking Customfield from Atlassian Marketplace,

  • create one or more custom fields of type Time Tracking or Duration (for example "QA Estimate", "SLA Limit"),

  • add these fields to the relevant screens (Create, View/Edit, and optionally transition screens and portals) for your projects.

For admin-level details, see the Getting Started and Configuration pages.

Use Time Tracking fields

  • What a Time Tracking field is and how it differs from a normal custom field.

  • Where you can see it (Create Issue, View/Edit, transitions, portals).

  • How to enter and update time using Jira-style duration strings (for example 30m, 2h, 1d 3h).

Use Duration fields

  • What a Duration field is and how it differs from a Time Tracking field.

  • Where you can see it (Create Issue, View/Edit, transitions, portals).

  • How to enter duration values and how auto-normalization works.

Looking for admin topics?

If you need to configure bucket sets (syncing multiple Time Tracking fields to Jira's native Time Tracking) or set up the workflow validator (requiring time to be logged before a transition), see the Configuration section.
